Bold Journey: West With Lewis and Clark by Charles Bohner (1985)

Bold Journey: West With Lewis and Clark is based on actual journal entries of those who made the previously uncharted 4,000 mile journey from St. Louis, Missouri to the Pacific Ocean.

This exciting historical novel is told through the eyes of a young soldier named Hugh McNeal.  Hugh was the youngest member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition when they left civilization in May of 1804. Very little is actually known about him as he did not keep a record of his experiences, and he does not show up in any other historical documents afterwards.  But his experiences would have been dangerous and thrilling beyond compare!

If you’re looking for a well-written, well-researched middle grade novel about Lewis and Clark, this is a good place to begin!
