General Butterfingers by John Reynolds Gardiner (1986)

General Butterfingers.jpgWalter’s mother runs a small boarding house taking care of three elderly men.  But they’re not just anyone, they are all World War 2 army heroes!  Decades ago these men belonged to an elite military group known as the Spitzers, and during a daring raid, rescued their beloved General Britt from certain death.

General Britt has recently died and now his nephew, who inherited the house Walter and the heroes live in, has sent a telegram evicting all of them — in just a few days!  Can Walter and his octogenarian friends figure out a way to outfox the heartless nephew and preserve the home they share and love?

General Butterfingers is an exciting and FUN story — and you’ll learn a bit of history as well.  It makes an excellent read aloud choice —  great for Memorial Day.
