The Big Wander by Will Hobbs (1992)

big wander.jpgFourteen year old Clay, and his older brother Mike are on a summer-long adventure in the deserts of the southwest.  Their uncle went missing two years ago and Clay feels if they can just get to the area where he last was seen, they can track him down.  As Clay describes it , “We’re going to see everything, go everywhere, do everything.  At the end of the roads we’re going to take off with our backpacks.”  That is until Mike decides he’s going to head home to Seattle and reconcile with his girlfriend.

Clay decides to stay and do The Big Wander on his own!  This coming-of-age book has everything for a young reader:  a boy, a dog, a burro and a spitfire of a pretty girl.  Combine that with a daring rescue of Clay’s long-lost uncle and you’ve got one fun Western in your hands!

Will Hobbs has written 21 books, all of which deal with adventure in the great outdoors.  Check out his shelf at your local library!
