Encyclopedia Brown Series by Donald J. Sobol (1963 – 2012)

I love a series that has 29 titles!

Encyclopedia brown.jpgI read the early Encyclopedia Brown books when I was in elementary school and introduced my own children to them when they were about that age too.  I still remember staying up late to finish the latest chapter and TRYING to solve each mystery!

Leroy “Encyclopedia” Brown is a 10 year old boy who has a knack for seeing inconsistencies.  Because of this talent, he often finds himself in the middle of a local mystery that needs a mind like his to solve it!   Each book contains several mysteries that are somehow interrelated.   Each book, however, is stand alone.  You can start reading anywhere in the series.

Happily the reader is expected to figure out the solution right along with Encyclopedia, but if you can’t solve it on your own, the answers are given at the back.  Over time, your child’s ability to see the hidden clues increases, which is very satisfying for young readers!

Most libraries have a large selection of Mr. Sobol’s books so you probably won’t have to buy a single title!
