“You’re such a Pollyanna!” So where does that phrase come from and what does it mean?? In 208 pages you’ll know the answer to both questions.
Pollyanna, an orphan — of course!, is sent to live with her Aunt Polly in a small Vermont town. Aunt Polly is very unhappy about the imposition her young niece brings and makes her feelings very plain to sweet little Pollyanna. But Pollyanna has a secret weapon that helps her stay happy despite her sad new life. Before he died, her father taught her how to play “The Glad Game”; how to look for the good in the face of sorrow and disappointment. Pollyanna needs The Glad Game more than ever in this sad new town filled with unhappy people.
Little by little Pollyanna makes a difference and the townspeople begin to see the good in their lives and to reach out to others with kindness. But then tragedy strikes Pollyanna’s life again. Can she play The Glad Game one more time?
I loved reading this out loud with my girls, and found myself changed for the better as I practiced The Glad Game magic too! What home can’t benefit from a bit of optimism?
There are numerous unauthorized sequels to the original Pollyanna book which are fun to read. Pollyanna Grows Up (96 pages, published in 1915), however, was written by Eleanor H. Porter, so don’t miss that one! The Disney version from 1960 starring perennial favorite, Haley Mills, is still worth watching.
