National Velvet by Enid Bagnold (1935)

National Velvet.jpg

Velvet Brown prays every night for a horse.  Miraculously her prayers are answered through an unexpected event.  Her horse is high-spirit and unpredictable, but she’s determined to train him to be a racer.  Could her beautiful horse possibly compete in the Grand National and become a champion?

Hold on to your seat as you follow this love story of a girl and her horse.

A young Elizabeth Taylor and Mickey Rooney star in a film adaptation.  It’s beautifully filmed and well worth watching after you’ve read the book — for, as we all know, the book is usually better!
